Ah, a question for the ages! Luckily, SOS Upholstery is here to share some tricks of the trade.
Boat upholstery is not like any other. It gets exposed to the sun and other unforgiving weather. If you leave it as it is, it tends to crack beyond repair. As a result, you’d have to cash out a bigger amount of money to make your boat’s seats look anew.
However, that shouldn’t be the case. We have a couple of suggestions that will keep your boat upholstery looking fresh.
- Prevent and remove mold or mildew.
No need to resort to harsh chemicals to get the job done. You can use a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and warm water. Mix them together in a 1:1 ratio and place the solution in a bucket or spray bottle. Apply the liquid, let it sit for a minute or so, then scrub it off.
- Wash with a soap and soda mixture.
Now that you have the mold off, create an all-purpose cleaner made of:
- ½ teaspoon each of Castile soap and washing soda
- 2 cups of water
- 15-10 drops of tea tree essential oil
Spray this solution and wipe the suds off with a clean rag. Be sure to dab off all the moisture. Once that is taken care of, you can apply a protectant. This will prevent your upholstery from cracking and getting discolored over time.
- Replace the upholstery when needed.
